What better way to celebrate World Environment Day 2023? Having toyed with a few ideas for planting trees, seeds, and seed balls the Women's Forum of the Bangalore Warrier Samajam decided to start something simple and practical. We approached the Government Model Primary School, Doddanekkundi, Bangalore and conducted a 'Best out of waste' program highlighting the need to save water, reduce recycling, and reuse plastic. Around 30 students of the sixth and seventh standards were selected to participate in the program.
The session started with an innovative version of the nursery rhyme 'Jack and Jill' used as a social ad about the importance of protecting our environment. Then we had a practical class for creating bags from used newspapers to bring home the idea that even simple daily life objects could be upcycled into attractive bags.
The mood was infectious as the school kids were surprised and happy that they got something so pretty and useful to go home with and so were our volunteers especially the young ones who also learnt and interacted so well with the school kids.
Though it was a simple project, the idea was that each child who took back their creation back home explains the idea to their families, neighbours and friends.
Thus it brings about a small change in the way they see each item that's purchased, the possibility of extending its use in different ways and more importantly understanding that this has an impact on the environment and the entire planet that we live and breathe in. Also, the Women's Forum of the Bangalore Warrier Samajam was satisfied that they were able to positively influence the students at the very beginning of the academic year.
Good initiative women's forum. Kudos to all volunteers..
