Behind the scenes of designing a new logo for BWS

After almost 40 years of inception, Bangalore Warrier Samajam felt a need for having a logo that reflects the identity of the samajam as well as is original in design. A logo designing competition was organized by BWS which was open to all members of the samajam. The committee offered a cash prize of Rs 5000 to the winner with some guidelines such as that the logo must represent BWS identity, must be original in design and should not be copied or duplicated from existing logos.

There was a phenomenal response from the young minds in our community with 15 entries received from 7 contestants. All the contestants came up with many different and unique ideas. The committee was very appreciative of all the contestants who enthusiastically came forward with creative ideas. The logos were judged on different criteria such as relevance, description, appeal, uniqueness and effectiveness. Based on these criteria, the committee members voted to elect the winning logo with a physical copy of the logo being evaluated to eliminate any bias.

The winning logo, which would be the new logo of Bangalore Warrier Samajam was announced on 5th March 2023. The winning logo was the brainchild of Ms Navya R Warrier, daughter of Mr Revi Warrier and Mrs Rema Warrier, Wasa Layout.

Navya R Warrier has a Master's degree in Visual Brand Design from Domus Academy, Milan. She has worked as a digital strategist with multiple brands such as Swiggy, MTR and Kurl-on. Navya is currently working with VGC Vyas Giannetti in Mumbai as a Brand Strategist where she works with strategic design needs for brands.

After declaring the name of the winner, the author of this post interviewed Ms Navya so that the readers can know about the thought process behind creating the logo.

Have you ever designed a logo for any organization?

Yes, I have designed the logo for the Madhuvanti Music Group. Apart from that, I have also taken part in a few logo design, redesign and brand refresh projects both at work and during my master's degree.

Will you please talk about your journey behind this particular logo design?

From research to ideation to sketching to designing, it took me about 3 days to finish the logomark. The artwork and colours were chosen keeping in the mind 3 factors- simplicity, ease of identification and overall aesthetics.

Is there any logo or any visual theme that influenced you to design this logo?

For BWS, I wanted to develop a clean yet familiar logomark that would be easy to recognize. For this, I felt it would be best to retain the Kerala lamp from the previous logo in the new one. I then referenced a "thookku velakku" to create the artwork because it symbolises positivity and awareness, both of which are philosophies behind the activities undertaken by the Samajam group in Bangalore.

How did you react to the moment, that declared your name as a winner in this contest?

I felt thrilled and honoured to have been able to re-design the logo for the Bangalore Warrier Samajam group, which is possibly the largest of its kind in the community and is known for its sheer size, large member base and wide range of activities and initiatives undertaken.

BWS members would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Navya R Warrier on designing our new logo that reflects our identity for several years to come.
